Printers - Why are my printers missing or not listed in Print Manager Plus?

Situations:

Why are my newly added printers on the Windows Print Server not showing up within Print Manager Plus?

Why are my printers in general not showing up within Print Manager Plus (this applies to a new or existing installation of Print Manager Plus)?

1. Why are my newly added printers on the Windows Print Server not showing up within Print Manager Plus?

Print Manager Plus detects initial printers on the print server when installed for the first time. When new printers are added/removed from the windows environment the Print Manager Plus Service must be restarted so to a complete enumeration of what exists. This entails the PMP Service reading the current list of printers from registry to determine exactly which printers are on the print server.

With the above explanation, you get general idea of what is going on with PMP and printers.

Rules of thumb:

When Adding printers to the Windows print server, the Print Manager Plus Service must be restarted.

When Removing prints from Windows print server, the Print Manager Plus Service must be restarted.

Service Account Permission
Usually this comes about due to insufficuent permissions granted to the Print Manager Plus Service Account. Essentially the Print Manager Plus Service is either running as the Local System account or Administrator/Domain administrator account which may or may not have enough permissions to read/write to the SQL database.

1. To change the Service Account for the Print Manager Plus go to the following.

a. START>RUN> (then within the Run dialog box type) services.msc then click [OK].

b. START>All Programs>Administrative Tools>Services.

2. Locate the Print Manager Plus Service, highlight, right-click and choose Properties. Click on the Log On Tab and chose This Account, here you specify a local or Administrator/Domain Administrator Account.

Once you have specifed the account click Apply and OK, You will be informed that changes will not be applied until Service is restarted. Restartthe Print Manager Plus Service.

Last thing to check - SQL Permissions to the Print Manager Plus Database
Sometimes permissions to the Service account may not have permission to Read or Write to the Print Manager Plus Database.
